The truth about designer mutts
68The truth about the Designer Dog
Myth 1; A labradoodle,Puggle, Cockerpoo, Spoodle , Buggs, Juggs are a Purebred dog.
Fact; Unsuspecting people will believe the lies that these breeders say. These "one of a kind" dogs are no more "rare and exotic" than any other mutt and mixed breed in the shelters today. They are simply mixed breed dogs, that people made up fancy names for. Naming these dogs is simply a way to sell puppy-mill dogs and backyard accidents for an inflated price by duping the uneducated buyer into believing he is acquiring a purebred dog
Myth 2. Poodle x make all litters low shedding and allergy friendly
Fact; 99% of Poodle x will shed and are NOT good for allergie suffers, if lucky only 1 out of all Poodle mixes will be low shedding. Some pups appear not to shed, but when the adult coat comes in, it start shedding between 18month2years.
Myth 3. Lower maintainence.
Poodle x still need to have daily grooming, 3-4month clippings and ear cleaning to reduce and prevent infection.
Myth 4; A new breed?
Fact; A fad, there will be many homeless pup in animal shelter. In the Us and Australia it already been happening and are available at discounted prices at your local animal shelter.
Myth 5; They will be healthier then purebred dogs.
Fact; Poodles and Labradors share the same health issues
So in actually fact a Labradoodle is NOT actually likely to be healthier.
Poodles; Runny Eyes,Cataracts, Progress retinal atrophy, allergies and skin conditions, Hip Dysplasia and Ear infections, Von Willebrand's Disease and suffer from bloat.
Labradors;Hip & Elbow Dysplasia, PRA and eye disorders.
Same problems affect the Golden Retriever
Puggles (Pug x Beagle mix)
Now these seems like a good idea? Cross a dog with breathing difficults, with a longer nose and hyperactive nature of the beagle to make the resulting litter easier to breath. Unfortuantly genetic doesn't work like that. In fact most Pug x Beagles have the breathing issues that pugs suffer from and the hyperactive nature of the Beagle. Do you think that a wise idea? Not a good idea.
Myth 6. Are there any good reptuable designer mutt breeders?
Fact; Puggle, labradoodle, pekepoo, or any other cutesie-named dog breeders are not doing this. They are picking cute animals and forcing them to breed beyond their capacity. They are not breeding to "improve the breed." They are breeding solely to make money, and that poses problems for the animals and for their owners. The only people breeding these mutts are Puppy Mills and Backyard Breeders and are after your mega $$$$$$$
Myth 7. Where can i get one
Fact; Basically, all that can be done to overcome this destructive fad is to keep a level head. If you want a Labrador x Poodle, I almost guarantee there is one at your local shelter. But if you buy a "labradoodle, Puggle, Goldendoodle, Cavapoo, Cockerapoo," you are encouraging puppy mill and backyard breeders to breed more trendy dogs who will not necessarily be healthy.
Pet overpopulation is enough of a problem in this world. Please don't add to the problem.

All hybrid dog breeders are NOT puppy mills and backyard breeders. I know several who spend thousands of dollars on health testing, etc, just to make sure both breeds are clear of genetic disorders. Purebred dogs all come from the same gene pool. Many are severely inbred. Show dogs are being so closely line bred that they are having fertility problems just for starters. When you cross two different breeds, you are crossing out of the gene pool and this is what creates a healthier dog. Breeders everywhere are noticing more vigorous puppies right from birth. Even mutts off the street have long been known for their longevity and better health. BTW, just because the AKC says it is a breed, means nothing. They are in it for the money. They register inbred dogs and require no health testing on breeding dogs at all. There are very few rules besides the "pay our fees" rule. It is quite a joke. The hybrid dogs are the least of our worries. These bad breeders would be breeding purebred dogs in the same irresponsible manner, if there wasn't a demand for the hybrids. How is that any better? The issue here isn't that the dogs are hybrids...it is the fact that the breeders themselves just don't care about anything but money. Until the public becomes educated about health testing and researching these breeders, making sure they see parent dogs, where they are housed, etc., your so-called puppy mills will always be around. Stop buying from pet shops!! Those are from commercial breeding facilities and leftover puppies that breeders couldn't sell. No responsible breeder would ever sell their stock to a pet shop. AKC could stop the puppy mills instantly if they suddenly required breed specific health testing on breeding animals. Think about it. Puppy millers would never put out that kind of money for testing. Even if they did, would their stock pass the tests? Many changes need to happen but lets look at the big picture here and stop classifying all breeders who don't follow AKC's standards (that don't work) as puppy mills. Google "GANA goldendoodle" and go to GANA's website. You'll find what a registry should be and some really good breeders too.
